From January 27, 2006 to March 4, 2007, the Canadian Museum of Civilization will present a winter exhibition on the evolution, transformation and establishment of skating in Canada, called Lace Up: Canada's Passion for Skating.
The exhibit looks at the European origins of skating and the establishment of skating in Canada in 1850. It will feature 60 types of ice skates, showing their evolution from early skates made of bone to the high-tech skates we use today.
Also on display, are skates used by Jackson Haines, an American figure-skating champion, who came to Montreal in 1864, and ice skates worn by speed-skater, Gaetan Boucher, when he won the Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Olympic Games in 1984. The exhibit also includes historical photographs, videos, audio recordings and programs for skating events and elegant 19th-century skating costumes.
The Canadian Museum of Civilization is located in Gatineau, Quebec, on the banks of the Ottawa River, opposite Ottawa Ontario's Parliament Hill.
