San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau encourages everyone to get crabby for CrabFest, the city's annual tribute to Dungeness crab.
Fisherman's Wharf is one of the main ports for activities. The month-long celebration includes a wine fest, featuring crab paella at The Cannery at Del Monte Square; up-close-and-personal encounters with the crustaceans at Aquarium of the Bay and the Alioto-Lazio Fish Co. (440 Jefferson St), special bay cruises on Blue & Gold Fleet and Red and White Fleet boats; value-added offers at several wharf restaurants and a classic car show. Even Pier 39's Tulipmania takes on some nautical nuances.
Downtown Union Square is the setting for the boisterous celebrity crab-cracking event, which benefits the San Francisco 49ers Foundation. For a nominal fee, area restaurants offer tastings. Mission District hosts Carnaval San Francisco Mardi Gras night at the Roccapulco Supper and Dance Club.
The San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau's website provides details on hotel packages, events, activities, transportation, participating restaurants, crab facts and recipes.
