The Horniman Museum Aquarium in Forest Hill, Southeast London, cost £1.5 million. Located near the Crystal Palace Aquarium, which was the world's largest when it opened in 1871, the aquarium contains 15 displays.
The Horniman Aquarium features endangered aquatic ecosystems, such as British ponds and rock pools, Fijian coral reefs and the South American rainforest.
Other displays showcase British seahorses, saltwater jellyfish, monkey frogs and four-eyed fish. A state-of-the-art life-support system preserves more than 250 species of animals and plants.
The museum was founded by philanthropist Frederick Horniman. Admission to the new aquarium is free.
